TEN TALKS TO WØLFFE

|
Written By:

WØLFFE, the British based alternative sonic mastermind that we've been watching rise up, has been working on a new project. With her recently released single Yuck soundtracking our days and nights, we caught up with one of our favourite artists to talk about starting a new era and what's next:

We're so excited about your recent single Yuck - is this the beginning of a new chapter for WOLFFE?

Thank you! Conceptually "Yuck" is a new chapter in the world of WØLFFE. Each EP has a narrative and is informed by the time of writing - Honeymoon Season was a break up EP, Yuck is the depression era. I wrote and produced so much of this new EP from my bedroom at a time where I was feeling really shit but it was ironically when I was the most prolific - I literally couldn't stop writing and was obsessively teaching myself to produce. But that was about 2 years ago, so there's a bit of a displacement in terms of what's going on in my life now and the music that's coming out.

Tell us about crafting the song and what was inspiring you?

One day I decided to sit down and write whatever came to me in a stream of consciousness, the words just fell out for this song Yuck. I was listening to a lot of electronic music at the time - Joe, Aphex Twin, Diskop, Two Shell and incorporated a jarring mix of hard rock and classic string elements to the production. I took the song to Dan McDougall to finish and I was like "this shouldn't work" and he was like "no - it does".

We also love the visuals. Who did you work with on the artwork and the film?

Thank you! I worked with my boyfriend who's a filmmaker and an incredible visual artist on the video and artwork. It's pretty magical to be with someone who understands the world you're trying to build and can craft a visual extension of that. He has introduced me to a lot of new music and film too. We shot the short horror film for Yuck over 6 days - by the end I was like "I just wanna finish this now" and he was like "no - we're not done". He's good at pushing me, and I think visa versa too.

We've heard you've been working on more music - what can you tell us?

The next single from the Yuck EP is a song called Holiday From My Mind which I've produced myself, I'm freaked out but excited to release that! I'm living in Wales at the moment at my friend Benji's house (who's a film composer and producer) to save money and finish writing and producing my debut record. I am a producer now, it's cool. I know how to EQ!

What's on the mood board for this upcoming project? Are there any films, ideas, musicians etc directly in your psyche?

I was listening to a lot of obscure music and I know for the Yuck video Skinamerink was definitely a film we were like OK wow. I find it really hard to pinpoint references, I think because I consume so much music but definitely visually I wanted grainy, washed out granulated images and all shot handheld. Horror, folk lore, romance and sadness, poems, noise and dirt. And all unpolished, to reflect the strange time.

We love your style. How has your style evolved since your last project? What have you been wearing and loving in your Yuck era? Style icons.

Why thank you. At the moment I'm going through an "I hate all my clothes" (which I sing in my head every time I open my wardrobe to that song "I get all the girls" by Calvin Harris) phase. My daily Welsh get up consists of about three jumpers, a pair of thick black Playboy cargo trousers I found in a charity shop and 2 pairs of socks and my DMs. Sexy ! But it's exciting going back to London or even the local town where I can dress up again - leathers and boots. There are lots of teen goths around here who look so fucking cool. They're my new style icons.

What other artists are on your radar that you're excited by?

I tell you who I'm obsessed with at the moment is Saul Adamczeski (from Fat Whites) and his album Adventures in Limbo. It's beyond brilliant. Also Jacob Alon who I've just discovered. Fairy in a bottle helps me get to sleep in the spooky house I'm living in. I love the bands Felt and Geese and also Okay Kaya. I'm listening to a lot of eerie folk music at the moment, I think that's the magical Welsh influence.

Who is an artist, producer, director etc that you'd love to collaborate with?

Well David Lynch is dead sadly, Thom Yorke would be wild or Joe Talbot. But mainly I'm happy making music by myself.

What's something you're passionate about right now instead of music?

I spend a lot of time teaching myself about spirituality and quantum physics. And how everything is energy - your words, your thoughts, how you feel about yourself. I'm naturally a bit of a catastrophizer so it requires a strict mindset to grapple. That and reading. I'm always reading. I've just finished Decline and Fall by Evelyn Waugh - so good and topsy turvy. Now I'm reading The Safekeep by the Dutch writer Yael van der Wouden. I'm very into wine at the moment too - when it gets dark at 5pm there's literally nothing else to do but drink wine and listen to music and smoke too many cigarettes.
