COACH: SS27

This is how to get a fashion party started. Coach kicked off fashion month with the brand’s 85th anniversary celebrations, showing the Spring 27 collection in New York City. How does Stuart Vevers, who has been at the helm of the brand for 13 years now, celebrate the momentous occasion? “The starting point was literally ‘Let’s celebrate Coach’s 85th birthday,’ and I think that started to make me think about where I wanted to bring joy into the occasion and where I wanted to focus on fashion,” Vevers exclusively told 10 Magazine Australia backstage. “I didn’t want a retrospective, I wanted to look forward.” The era the Coach person is in, is “the now,” Vevers said. “It’s got to be about now. I love looking at my memories of New York from the ‘90s but I design with now in mind.”

For Spring 27, the ultimate party wear was presented. Classic Coach-caramel-brown leather party hats were sprinkled with palettes; crowns were worn askew; brilliant shimmering sequins swished on floor length skirts and matching cropped singlets, and on men’s open suit jackets. Tailoring was ultra loose, crushed silk oozing with that New York City swagger. Knitted sleeves were added to ultra light jacquard dresses that were paired with either the new Hudson sneaker or the squishy leather Western boots, and the bags in tow were rubbed with gold and silver metallic foil. The celebrations didn’t end there: confetti adorned Tabby Bags, including the epic new Turnlock Tote that was inspired by a 1970 design from the house, featuring the Turnlock hardware.

Vevers told us that what makes a great party is, “great drinks, great music and great people”. This Coach show - and afterparty - had all that, with Troye Sivan sitting alongside Elle Fanning, before the curtains dramatically dropped behind the runway to reveal student musicians from Upbeat NYC,  a nonprofit providing free music education to young people in the Bronx, performing MFSB’s Love Is the Message. As a larger-than-life disco ball appeared behind them above a makeshift dance floor, we partied on into the night, alongside all of New York City's coolest kids. It was the ultimate party in the U.S.A.
