TEN QUESTIONS WITH WYNN HAMLYN

Tonight is the night. New Zealand designer Wynn Hamlyn is getting ready to show a new collection, motorsport inspired, at AAFW. Sounds like our kinda show. As the brand continues to evolve, we spoke to the designer about the DNA of Wynn Hamlyn, music and collaboration:
What was inspiring you when you were designing this collection?
I didn’t go into designing the collection with a specific theme or inspiration in mind, I wanted to do something fun with no restrictions. As time went the range came together with motorsport influence. I feel like there is a whole world of undiscovered apparel within the motorsport and specifically the formula 1 world that can influence fashion.
What was the catalyst from the inspiration? What really made the leap from the mood board into the collection?
The idea of the collection became real when we sampled our first pieces of leather. It was very new for us and fun to create.
What emotions and thoughts from you are imbued in these pieces?
I really wanted to have fun with this collection. There is a real playful mood through all the pieces which we haven't done much of in the past.
How is the DNA of the brand evolving?
I think our DNA is getting stronger with each season we release as we learn what works for us and what we enjoy creating. We have our signature pieces that will be ongoing for the brand, but it’s about reinventing those classics and bringing in new icons to our range.
Recycling, repurposing, renewal. These are all important things in the world of 10. How do these apply to your work?
Our collection is a constant series of development and trailing. Each season we show the pieces that are coming out of our thought processes and development and any pieces that aren't used are put in the archive for future development. We sample from deadstock fabric from our previous seasons and consistently work to minimise waste throughout the whole sampling development and production process.
Who would you love to see wearing it? Which look would they be wearing?
FKA Twigs in the Kate Top and the Women's Lowrise Denim Shorts would be dream.
Into the future: which piece would you hope to be the ultimate Wynn Hamlyn collector’s item.
I hope the Leather sets become a staple in people's wardrobe, we're really proud of them and excited for everyone to see!
There are brilliant people to collaborate with Australia. Who has been part of your world/journey/team with this collection? Mentors, stylists, hair, makeup etc…
It’s been amazing to collaborate again with the Solomon team as well as WELLA and Kieran Street as creative director for hair. Our exciting new partnerships with MECCA and the incredible Sean Brady as the creative director on make up. With the support of Freddie Fredericks on styling.
What’s important to you aside from fashion? How would you like to use your platform?
My family and people around me are so important. And I like to use my platform to inspire people to lead the lives they want to live and be who they want to be.
What is the soundtrack to this collection?
The soundtrack is an original track produced by two musicians from New Zealand who go by the name of Cay.
