TEN QUESTIONS WITH MGNA CRRRTA

|
Written By:

MGNA CRRRTA are riding the wave of the rise of #girledm with their epic production, brilliant wardrobes and clever visuals. Now, the New York City electro pop duo have released one of the best songs of the year. Pür Love is the girls' first single of the year and the first music they've dropped since their exciting signing to Future Classic. It's an electroclash EDM extravaganza that we have on repeat. "Pür Love is the ethereal experience of exploration in life," Farheen Khan and Ginger Scott of MGNA CRRRTA say. "We know that fairies are real— do you? In a child-like imaginative and fantastical sense, we uncover hidden knowledge through the bond of sisterhood. Hallucinations, prophetic visions, and awakenings can be expected. Ethereal. Spiritual. A connection with the guardians of the universe, the bearers of the secret that is the future. Pür love is sensation and being."

In the last couple of years, the girls have captured the attention of some of our chosen ones: Hedi Slimane invited them to DJ at Celine’s Homme Summer afterparty in Paris, 10's forever fav Uffie remixed their song Girl Party, and Ke$ha made a special appearance during their Freakquencies DJ set at LeBain in NYC. Naturally. Between their headline shows, DJ appearances and music-making, we spoke to the duo about what's on the MGNA CRRRTA mood board and working with Australian mastermind Ninajirachi:

We love your music! For those who don’t yet know, you met through a Minecraft server when you were younger. How has technology and the internet influenced you and the music you make? Do you love or hate the Internet?!

Obv can’t live without iPhone. Love the internet but sometimes it gets weird.

It’s hard to answer that because we’ve never really lived without the internet. It’s so intertwined with everything now that it’s kind of impossible to create something completely disconnected from it, not that we would want to do that. So many of our childhood memories are from being on the internet. It’s how we consume all the content and music that inspires us. Everyone’s scared that it’ll ruin art and whatever but we’re not that worried about it. It’ll always play a big role in the creation of our music. One of the songs on the mixtape is secretly about Minecraft but we won’t say which.

You have a mixtape coming out with Future Classic, which we’re very excited about. What can you tell us about the making of it? What can we expect?

This mixtape is the most canon MGNA Crrrta artefact to date. Expect feelings of awakening, exploration, and discovery– everything moving super fast but also so slow. Angst, love, friendship, being a girl.. this mixtape has been in creation mode on and off throughout the past three years since our debut. The mixtape is three years of staying up all night making music, seeing the world touring, living with our friends in New York City, witnessing the world around us… it’s an ode to this chapter of MGNA but also a message for girls and an image for the future.

Who have you worked with that has helped to shape your sonic or visual identity?

All our best friends. Eloise Moulton has been styling us since the very beginning… We went to the woods with her and our other friends Izzy Dent and Ellis Becker Lipton earlier this summer to shoot the Pür love music video. We also just finished our third video with Poortfolios that’ll be part of this project.

Musically, we’re constantly collaborating with friends in NYC and over the internet but specifically on this mixtape there is production featured from brightviolet, ali rq, Ziel, Matt Marvin, and Franco Reid. We made half the songs on this project with brightviolet. Waveracer is mixing the whole project.

Tell us about your live show - how do you bring the MGNA Crrrta world to life in that way?

Imagine waking up in the middle of the night and you just had the most abstract alien dream ever…but you kinda wanna go back into the dream.

We always tell whoever is doing lights to make it look like you’re looking at God. People should lose themselves in the music and dance. We want it to be euphoric and unforgettable.

You have fab style and we know you two are obsessed with fashion. Do you remember your first foray into fashion? When did it begin?

Minecraft skins and picking outfits in Create a Sim.

Which designers would you love to work with? Who is the ultimate MGNA Crrrta tour wardrobe by?

Eloise Moulton is our best friend and stylist! Before every tour we go over to her house and play with so many clothes and accessories. It kind of just feels like playing dress up with your friends. She’s a genius. We always start with a vibe then decide how clothing emanates that, rather than starting from a brand, nothing is off the table.

Where do you find inspiration for your visuals and what you wear? What’s been on the moodboard recently?

Most of our inspiration comes through nature and emotion rather than the material itself. It often starts with identifying the feeling which we want to embody/portray and then finding the pieces that evoke it. It’s hard for us to pinpoint specific references because everything we make is an encapsulation of everything we’ve seen and been impacted by throughout our whole lives.

You’ve worked with and toured with Ninajirachi, who we love. What was it like working with Nina?

Nina is one of our BFFs 4ever and making music and dancing with her will always be super special. #girledm

What’s exciting you right now in music? Which artists are you inspired by?

Ninajirachi.

Our biggest inspirations have always been Kesha, Grimes, Alice Glass, Charli… every cool girl.

What’s something you are passionate about aside from music? Something you’d like to

We stand for everything good in the world. If that doesn’t cover everything, Girl EDM. Trashy TV shows. Nature. Meaningless/ful conversation. Feeling everything. Music is part of everything.
