TEN QUESTIONS WITH LUVCAT
Luvcat is the Liverpool-born, Paris-loving artist who is cleverly crafting a dark, gothic romantic fairytale. Her debut album Vicious Delicious, has been a mainstay on-repeat at 10 Magazine, inspired by Luvcat's Parisian escapades and whirlwind romances. Our kind of material. We spoke to the rising star about crafting the record and the wonderful world of Luvcat:
We've been listening to your album a lot and we love it. Tell us about your intention behind this project and what you set out to create?
Thank you. Making this album happened accidentally. After releasing a couple of singles I realised I wanted to make an LP and release it on Halloween. I hoped to capture the last few wild years and all the lovers and libertines I’ve crossed paths with.
Where did you craft the music? Was there a specific place that was conducive for your writing?
For the recording, we stole moments between our touring schedule and festival season and made the record between Liverpool, London, Manchester, Paris and Berlin. For the writing, I mostly sit at my old piano at home and open up my notebooks.
Was there something specific inspiring you on this album? What were you thinking about as you wrote?
I love telling stories. I think that comes from being from Liverpool. Scousers are born by the water and I think something about that inspires visceral and mythical storytelling. My dad always added to his tales as he got older. A bit like the film Big Fish. So you never quite know where to draw the line between truth and whimsy. I like to live life that way.
Who did you work with in terms of production who helped to shape your vision?
My good friend Oli Barton-Wood produced the album. Alongside my right hand man and band member, Thomas Fripp. It was a privilege to craft the production with them and dive deep inside the meaning of the lyrics.
Speaking of vision, we love your visuals and your vibe. What was on the Luvcat moodboard for this chapter?
i like it to feel like a fucked up circus or a sexy funeral.
You seem to love fashion like we do. Who would be your dream designer to dress you for the ultimate Luvcat tour?
Vivienne Westwood, always!
For those who don’t yet know you, give us your backstory. When did you start writing music?
I started writing poems when I was around 6 years old. Then I started sitting at the piano and writing my first songs a few years later. Then lots of busking and teenage rock n roll bands and wedding singing. And now I’m here.
Which other artists are you excited about at the moment? What have you been listening to?
I love MJ Lenderman so much. I’m obsessed with lyrics. And he has such a lyric identity. The imagery is often absurd, the humour is dark and the emotions are raw.
We love him, too. What’s something that’s important to you aside from music? Something you want to use your platform for?
I’m thinking about starting a charity for cats. As soon as I have some time off over Christmas I’m gonna sort it.
What’s next?
Immortality.
