TEN QUESTIONS WITH CAROLINE REZNIK

|
Written By:

Tonight Caroline Reznik closed out Australian Fashion Week with her much anticipated Resort '24 show. The designer, who infuses her dance background into design, has already dressed Rosalia, Doja Cat and Kendall Jenner in her slinky, badass ready-to-wear. We spoke to Caroline ahead of the show to talk the evolution of her brand and what is important to her:

What was inspiring you when you were designing this collection?

"My environment, my past in ballet and global issues surrounding."

What was the catalyst from the inspiration? What really made the leap from the mood board into the collection?

"The ideas from the mood board were collated over the last 8 months and transcribed into tangible concepts. I adopted references and feelings about animal instinct and found correlation within human instinct. It was a matter of finding alignment in how far a reference would be taken literally or figuratively from the animalia themes."

How is the DNA of the brand evolving?

"The DNA of the brand in its beginnings employed methodologies of theoretical dance movement as a means to dictate cloth on the body. These methodologies still exist; however, the brand DNA has grown by employing my understanding of how a ballet can portray a story about moments of common ground and be expressed through an art form, which for me, is fashion."

Recycling, repurposing, renewal. These are all important things in the world of 10. How do these apply to your work?

"These are all important factors within the work I create. A lot of the materials, while extravagant in appearance are mostly sourced from suppliers from deadstock materials and are reworked textile generations."

Who would be your bullseye buyer? Who would you love to sell to (which stores)?

"I don’t have a bullseye buyer in mind. I would just love to be included in a marker that is open to individually spoken work from emerging designers."

Who would you love to see wearing it? Which look would they be wearing?

"I have never set out to dress anyone. It has always been a natural calling for the work from the wearer. I feel very lucky to have had celebrity placements and at this point in my career the people I would love to see wearing my clothing is the everyday person on the street."

Into the future: which piece would you hope to be the ultimate Caroline Reznik collector’s item.

"Either a rendition of my leather styles, crystal, and lace pieces."

There are brilliant people to collaborate with Australia. Who has been part of your world/journey/team with this collection?

"My rocks are Catinella Pr and The Event Group. They have been my strongest collaborators during my show process."

What’s important to you aside from fashion? How would you like to use your platform?

"The first thing that comes to mind is my down time and how I can stay in touch with myself and the people I care about. Ironically fashion is about how the touch of the world or personal endeavours can be delivered through the work a designer creates. But I find that creating fashion takes away from my touch with a normal reality and feeling human is harder to come by for long periods of time. I think there’s much that I would like to do with my platform, I won’t project it now, but I hope to add value in more ways that just creating clothes that exist on a hanger for longer than they do on our bodies."

What is the soundtrack to this collection?

There are several sounds... the aim is to feel like music is flowing through your veins.
