CHANEL: AW22

A slew of tweed. The show space a tweedy tundra. A collection suffused with sorbet colours that added sweetness to this expert homage to Gabrielle Chanel and the heartland history of the house. It was our kind of rollicking in the heather, which we feel Mme Chanel must have done with her lover the Duke of Westminster. All patch pockets and Norfolk jackets. And so, minus the telling tufts of moss and grass, the collection gently unfurled like a native fern. The knit socks worn with kitten heel pointy sling-backs adding an air of good gal gone bad - perhaps somewhere east of Edinburgh. (We all left with a bottle of Paris Edimbourg which is one of the best Chanel fragrances, inspired by the Scottish moors, all lemon earthiness.) We think this was the morning after the country house ball, a Bloody Mary on the rocks and some sensible clothes. Virginie Viard does sensible - and desirable with a neat lineup of tweedy bags and tiny trinket versions too. The collection had a nice lighthearted youthfulness that love brings. We're in.
