BURBERRY: RESORT 2023

Back in January, Riccardo Tisci launched Friends and Family, an exciting initiative which will see the designer collaborate with different creatives within his global network on Burberry’s pre-collections. After joining forces with model and long-time muse Lea T for the concept’s inaugural outing, this time it was the turn of American artist Jared Buckhiester. “Jared and I have been close friends for a long time and I have always admired him, both for his dedication to his work and the passion that comes with that, as well as his commitment to living fiercely by his identity and being true to himself,” said Tisci.

After walking in the brand’s AW22 show, Buckhiester collaborates with Tisci on a collection which collides classic Burberry codes with leanings towards workwear and ‘90s rave influences, which come polished and refined. “I see Burberry as a signifier of British culture, it’s woven into my conception of what it is to be British, similar to punk or rave culture,” says Buckhiester. “Add to that Riccardo – and my relationship to him as a friend – and suddenly Burberry becomes more personal and tactile. It maintains its British core, but the rave is right alongside.’

Each piece is birthed of Burberry tradition but fashioned with hedonistic sensibility. Like wax cotton jackets with hazard orange stripes and black shirt, ties and trousers cut from leather. Handsome varsity jackets and roomy jeans come spliced with the Burberry nova check print, paired alongside playful cardies stamped with cartoon farm animals and glam car coats with feminine pleats. Darting in a myriad of directions, the collection flirts with fetishism while embracing tradition, plotting a wardrobe that speaks to all strands of the Burberry clientele.
