TEN TALKS TO FREAK SLUG
One of our ones to watch in 2025, Freak Slug has confirmed her status as one of indie rock pop's most exciting voices with the release of her EP Loose Tooth and a Short Skirt. Following her standout performances in Australia during SXSW, we spoke to Freak Slug from her home in Manchester, where she discussed her most recent project and, of course, her style:
How do you think being from Manchester influences your sound?
Oh, it definitely does. People don't understand - it's the northern attitude that affects it. People don’t get it unless you're from here. It's not rude, it's just passion. We naturally are this way and it's brilliant. It’s fun, it’s spicy, there's so much bite, and I love it. That’s one thing that’s really influenced the way I write. My dad’s super northern, super monkey-union, and that’s been a big part of who I am... even if it’s something my mom hated about me. It is what it is, and it’s something I’m really proud of. Naturally, the music that’s come from here - considering how small it is - is quite plentiful. We all really respect the music from here, and that brings everyone together in Manchester. So yeah, it’s influenced me massively in so many ways.
Where did you make the EP? Were you writing it there at home?
No, I wrote it in a really eclectic mix of places. One song in LA, one in London. I think this is a bit of a limbo, transitional bit of music before the real shit that’s coming. This is my last bit of fun before things get a bit serious, you know?
Is there a song you're most proud?
I’m not really one to be “proud.” That’s not how I roll. But I enjoy Honest Man. It really spoke to my heart when I wrote it, and I know that if it moves me, it’ll move other people. That’s what it’s about for me. I love direct lyrics and messages. Does It Matter is also a really beautiful song. It’s got a really ethereal but also direct energy, which I enjoy. But honestly, once I release the music, I let it do its thing, it’s gone. I let it roam free like a little child.
How do you feel about performing then, and having to play all the songs once you've released them? Do you enjoy that?
Yeah. Performing has its own vibe. I do like it. I like connecting with the fans. I like travelling, even though it’s tiring. I still enjoy it, and it’s a really interesting job. I’m grateful for what I do.
What inspires you visually and in terms of fashion? You have a great sense of ease to your style.
Honestly, I don’t even know how I make decisions. I feel like I’m the wind - they just happen. This is a truly honest answer. I don’t put much thought into it, but somehow things evaporate and reappear in my life. Fashion included. Clothes... I just like things and I put them on. I’m not deep in it. I don't really give a fuck about what people think about me. Clothes go on my body. Sometimes I make mistakes, sometimes I don’t. Sometimes it pops off, sometimes I’m like, "that was an awful choice,” but I’m experimenting and having fun. That’s how I see my fashion and all my choices.
For those who haven't yet listened to your EP, how would you describe it?
My music is emotional and deep, even though I like to have fun. I think because I’m avoiding... that’s when my actual emotions come through, which is nice. So generally, it’s for people who want to feel something. You can be anywhere and feel some shit, but ideally, probably alone.
