PRADA: SS27

For me, the skirt is like a t-shirt,” Mrs Prada said during an interview in 2006 with Ingrid Sischy. We came full circle 20 years later, with Mrs Prada and Rad Simons delivering a collection simply titled, 'The Skirt'. Of course, it wasn’t just any skirt. This was Mrs Prada at her finest, adding clever details such as the overlaid sheer organza fastened with velcro, knife pleats of nylon, cotton prints (suggestions of an apron skirt), skirts bristling with beads and crystals, and prints from the 1950s through to the 1970s. Many were worn with simple satin seamed bra tops, others with slouchy knit-one-purl-one vests. Textures and volume at play.

This was a collection with cool swagger, one that will race out of the Prada stores. We loved the satin ‘thongs’ with heels and a twinkle of diamond, and the new canvas primary colour bags with minimal same colour triangles. The leather jackets were 1960s off-to-university perfection. Some made in cotton to look like leather. This was Mrs Prada and the language of Prada distilled for now. Nothing as it should be. The skirt as object, like an art exhibition. At face value the singular idea was deceptively simple, the result wonderfully clever.
