ZIMMERMANN: RESORT 2024

|
Written By:

Dance on. This season, Nicky Zimmermann had been dreaming of the optimism and thrill of the local dancehalls of the 1950s. "I loved the movement of the big skirt twirling, the toughnessof the boyish rolled sleeves, the clashes of style. I read a great piece about the dance hall being the place that so many people of the era found love," said Nicky. We asked her 10 Questions to get the exclusive lowdown on Resort 2024:

We love the name Matchmaker. Why was this the perfect title for this collection?

I read a great piece about dance halls being the place so many people from the era found love… the ultimate Matchmaker of the decade.

What was the starting point for the collection?

I was inspired by old images of dance halls from the 1950s, which became the starting point for the Resort ’24 collection.

Where or what was inspiring you as you designed these pieces?

I was drawn by the movement of the big skirts twirling, the varied silhouettes, the toughness of the boyish rolled sleeves, the clashes of style, and the overall mood of such an exciting, rebellious place where people were able to express themselves freely whilst connecting with one another.

What were you listening to, reading, watching etc as this collection came to life?

Ted Lasso.

Do you have a favourite look?

It’s always hard to narrow it down to one… though there are a couple of pieces I’ll be packing in my suitcase for our upcoming summer travels – the Matchmaker Shirt Dress and the Daisy Midi Dress.

Why was America the place to showcase this collection?

We are shooting in Pennsylvania in a location that is a little surprising, but creatively enhances the way we want to shoot the collection. We are already in the US for a few events we have on, so it works well from a logistics and timings perspective.

Tell us about the casting of this shoot.

We’re working with a great group of models who have mostly been in our shows before. A few star Aussie girls like Akiima and Ajok – and Viv who we worked with on our upcoming Fall campaign and Cara who we also appeared in our last Swim campaign. Being on set is always a lot of fun – we have a great crew that we’ve been working with for some time.

How do you hope this collection plays into the life of a Zimmermann woman? Hope do you hope they feel?

My focus is always on making women feel good. We strive to create pieces that will resonate, that are evocative, and that women feel a strong connection to. This takes shape by intersecting functionality and design – creating silhouettes that are flattering with lots of detail, whilst being practical and comfortable to wear. I love designing pieces that are emotive and can be associated with special moments in life. There’s often a lot of detail in our pieces and I love that these add a little something to the piece, just for the wearer to enjoy.

What else are you passionate about right now that is driving you?

I just love the process of creating collections. It’s always been the same for me.

What’s next?

Aside from the next collection, I’m travelling to the Hamptons this week to host a Zimmermann dinner with friends to celebrate the Summer, followed by some time with our design team in the Paris office. Oh, I have a wedding in Paris too which will be super fun.
