TEN GOES INSIDE COOKII’S HOME STUDIO

Written By:

Cookii, one of our musical acts to watch (we’ve had popstyle on repeat), have been hard at work curating their ultimate home studio space. The Melbourne duo have infused the studio with local love, featuring pieces from Melbourne-based artists and designers, to bring their hyperpop, digital-inspired world to life. We spoke to the duo about the creation of this special, electric studio space:

Congratulations on your recent release. We hear that your at-home studio is a special place, filled with Melbourne based artists, designers etc. Why was it important for you to incorporate local artists in your space?

“Thanks so much! We’ve always had a lil obsession with following cool local artists. There’s so much amazing stuff to find that’s close to us why look any further? There are so many amazing artists in Melbourne, I think we’re very lucky to live in a place that values creatives the way we do.”

What’s your most prized possession in the studio?

“Probably the outer leaves pillow. It was designed with the popstyle artwork in mind so the colour palette matches and every time I look at it I get that little warm feeling.”

Can you recall the most magical session you’ve had in this studio?

“Oddly it’s probably when we made a cover of MakeDamnSure (we haven’t put it anywhere yet). That night was just really nice, we’d worked all day on our own stuff and just letting loose and making something fun was so relieving.”

What dream item would make your studio all the more special?

“Anything to do with Pokemon or Digimon. Dream collabs are right there. They’re just so cute and I would like all of the things. Or, Lucian has always had an obsession with “the upside down room” so if we could somehow put everything on the ceiling but still be relatively functional that would be fun.”

What’s the key to keeping your studio a creative, joyful space?

“I guess in some ways the studio is a reflection of our music in that it’s not necessarily inspired by anything too specific and it’s function is really just to be fun. Both the studio and our music is just a hodgepodge of things we like, most of which don’t necessarily go together. The room really isn’t even that appropriate as a studio either. The acoustics are actually pretty crap. We’d just much rather be in a pretty room surrounded by stuff that inspires us than a boring, properly treated grey/white/black studio.”

Did you record all of popstyle in this studio? Which song are you most proud of on the mixtape?

“Yeah! We’ve never really branched out and hired a studio or anything. There’s 10+ years of gear in there so we don’t really need to anymore. We’re both very proud of moonlight. It’s just a nice song lol we don’t often get a chance to just write something nice cause cookii is so silly. It’s a different kind of sound for us but somehow still makes sense.”

Who is your ultimate studio guest?

“Hmm, that’s a big question. If we’re being serious it’d probably be Skrillex or like, Justin Bieber. If we’re being silly it’d probably be Trisha Paytas. That would be hilarious and probably turn out amazing.”

What’s next for cookii?

“More songs!”
