INSIDE 10: WILLY NDATIRA

It’s been a strange year for fashion, to say the least. The dashing men we’re used to seeing at shows, press appointments and late-night fashion-week parties have been confined to their humble abodes. So, for the inaugural Inside 10, we stepped into the homes of some of the industry’s most adored gentlemen – on a quest to discover how they really live. Expect lavish art, fancy sofas and, of course, handsome looks pulled from the SS21 collections. Next up is the brilliant writer, creative consultant and consulting editor of Fantastic Man, Willy Ndatira, who wears Balenciaga.

What’s your most prized possession in your home?

“In 2018, for London Fashion Week, I opened a temporary fake art gallery, for which I created nine large prints in light boxes that featured images of colourful poisonous flowers overlaid with the faces of famous serial killers and cult leaders – people like Charles Manson, Aum Shinrikyo, Jeffrey Dahmer. When you light them up they create a beautiful, colourful light source, but if you look closer they’re pretty grim. Some people only see the flowers, others see the serial killers. It’s supposed to induce a feeling of attraction and repulsion. I never sold them, they are scattered around my loft.”

What dream item would make your home all that more special?

“A painting by Kerry James Marshall or Lynette Yiadom-Boakye.”

What’s the key to keeping your humble abode a happy one?

“I subscribe to a flower-delivery service. They send me flowers weekly with instructions on how to arrange them – I’m learning a new skill. I like the flowers because they bring a little bit of nature into the converted factory space, which is also my workspace.”
