Introducing 10 Magazine Australia Issue 25: MUSIC, TALENT, CREATIVE.

EDITOR'S LETTER

The first thing to know about our relationship with music is that it’s intrinsic to fashion and all we do at 10. Music is always playing in the office, so it made sense to celebrate something so mood-enhancing and positive in a fashion season of uncertainty, underpinned by major change, new names and everything under the lens.

My first piece of 45rpm vinyl was by Nina Simone – I played it on a Dansette record player in my bedroom. My walls were covered edge to edge with posters. My first concert was Kate Bush in Bristol (in April 1979 during her Tour of Life), which was amazing, and there have been so many more since – standouts include Madonna, Michael Jackson, Fleetwood Mac and, recently, Radio Free Alice supporting The Killers. I was in a band at school and my first boyfriend was in a band too; he played bass. I played piano and guitar, and the baby-blue Fender Stratocaster given to me in the early ’90s is well used. My family has always been into music; even my grandfather played piano and cornet at the village hall – and everyone danced.

My mum taught music and is in two choirs. I think one of the best things that comes from music is the ripple effect of creativity – pick up 10 Men too and read the interview with Jamie xx. This issue would not have been possible without Roxy Lola, our passionate music editor: she has picked her 10 musicians to watch in Australia and showcases our cover stars Jacoténe and KSMBA. They are both super-talented – Jacoténe’s voice is phenomenal. She was photographed in Melbourne by James J. Robinson, working the best tailored pieces from Emporio Armani. Meanwhile, KSMBA brings dance energy to their DJing and music-making – and wore a wardrobe of Chanel. Roxy also interviewed the enigmatic Banks, who recreated herself in Dior in LA for our shoot.

10 is a growing global family: the team at 10 USA shot Kelsey Lu working it in slick Gucci; while 10 UK photographed a chill Ama in the new Louis Vuitton x Murakami collaboration. And as 10 Deutsch debuts, our Global Fashion Editor, Veronika Heilbrunner, styled the Polish composer and singer Mary Komasa for a shoot with Juergen Teller. All of fashionland is playing in this sound space. It is the place to lose and find some kind of discord and wild harmony. On the playlist right now: Caroline Polachek and Fontaines D.C., and FKA twigs is dropping as I type. But every day is different and a rabbit hole of finds, from Franz Liszt’s symphonic poems to Rosé and Bruno Mars’s APT. occasionally blasting forth… Kissy face, kissy face… It’s whatever, it’s whatever, it’s whatever you like.
