If this Gucci handbag could speak… “There were various ‘Wows!’ and a couple of ‘LOLs’ from the global fashion corps who congregated at the old Le Palace nightclub in the Opéra district of Paris. It was in this place – now rather dusty and retired, in a fabulous way – that Alessandro Michele sent me out with a brown velour tracksuit and monk-strap shoes. I and all the clothes and wonderful accessories in that collection demonstrate the designer’s ability to grab from thither and yon, past and present, and reissue it all for the season ahead. Did you ever think you’d need a Mickey Mouse merch shop- alike handbag? Probably not. But now you do. You want it – me. I’m a bit of fun. A bit mad, ironic and clever. I ask, ‘Well, dare you?’ Many will. And there’s your other point – Michele’s Gucci sells. I’ll sell! Rumours have it there’s an enquiry list currently doing the rounds in all Gucci stores. People want Michele’s irony, they want to be seen carrying his bit of fun. If fashion is about anything, it’s about changing the mood of the people who wear it. If a Mickey Mouse handbag raises a smile, great! And if a Mickey Mouse handbag gets you noticed on Instagram and brings all manner of comments and emoticons, better still. I’m certainly not a handbag for the shy and retiring, something Gucci have never been.”
