Claire Waight Keller is a woman designing for women (and men, but more on that later). She’s one of few women designing for women at a House and so she is determined to give us what we want, need, desire – even if we don’t know it. A Resort collection is more often than not a flush of fabulous summer colours on clothes that feel right to holiday in. Not for this working woman. Claire Waight Keller is designing for the woman who means business, constantly travelling and getting it done. Givenchy Resort 2020 is a collection with the intention of practicality and a good dose of Givenchy glamour. Claire’s become good at that. The move from slouchy sportswear to slick tailoring is all through it; dresses are structured, fitted; camel-coloured jumpsuits ooze ease and sharp-shouldered blazers fall to the knee, emblazoned with gold buttons. Flares of red on all that black have become part of Claire’s signature at Givenchy. Denim on denim is done expertly, cinched to the waist and the faux fur fluffiest coats are warrior-like, tough girl. Shiny suits are cropped, flared and paired with a gleaming green platform heels. A soft, sweet pink dress is framed with red lace. The winning colour combination. The final slew of dresses, wafer-fine lace falling in strawberry ice-cream pink, fanning high up the neck and chiffon-scalloped edges fluttering on edges of soft silk are the perfect fairytale ending, good for the night. Menswear is smart. Bond-style suits and Givenchy stamped racer jackets for the man who likes to flex. Hoodies are tucked into jeans – interesting, but somehow it works here with a motorbike helmet in hand. Claire Waight Keller has us sorted, on the move. Givenchy Resort 2020 is serious business.
