In the Balenciaga underworld, “presence is key. now is the answer,” or so said the booming voice over the hypnotic techno trance music. Doof doof. Inside a digital 2000sq metre tunnel designed by Jon Rafman, Demna Gvasalia’s robots came forth. Big shouldered and in a whole lot of suit jackets turned dresses, shiny dripping tied at the waist and liquid velvet pants falling into bootleg shapes. Dresses overflowed into robes, Balenciaga school of witchcraft and wizardry, like cloaks of invisibility. Classic Demna suits were straight, slick with clever collars and good soft camel colours. The last dresses, especially that fiery redhot on Cat McNeil felt cut from the Balenciaga DNA. But let’s talk about that last dress covered in Balenciaga logos makes us think… are we over the logo? Hmm. This is Demna’s domain, his people rule and we will continue to bow down.
