Sarah Burton had been to the Royal Botanic Gardens at Kew in London. The larger-than-life glasshouses filled with plants and flowers in full bloom fuelled a collection that celebrated the earth’s treasures. Resort 2020 is vividly good, deep hot pinks and the richest reds – the ones Burton always does best – frilling and flowing and peeking out from under silk faille dresses. Hand-cut silk taffeta ruffles and pleated paper taffeta fizzes between moments of seriously structured tailored suit jackets, all embroidered with herbaria specimen and diamanté jewels. It is an ode to endangered and extinct flowers, preserved beautifully, like on the final black tulle dress that has been hand-embroidered with delicate tufting from such flowers. The Alexander McQueen woman always has a purpose.
