By the end of 2019, our bookshelves will be as GG-clad as our shoe cabinet – and you won’t hear us complaining. The latest special edition publication comes in collaboration with Greek director, producer and screenwriter Yorgos Lanthimos who created a portfolio of images featuring Alessandro Michele’s Cruise 2020 collection. Titled Oviparity, the book references an ancient Greek myth of Leda and the Swan which inspired the name of the setting for the shoot.
The photographs were taken at the Leda Gallery of Villa Albani Torlonia in Rome, a mid-18th century build imagined by architect Carlo Marchionni. Back when it originally opened, it was a cultural hub best known for hosting influential figures and discussions on neoclassical style, concerts, dances and masked comedies. Yorgos Lanthimos’ captures the Gucci gang amid the historical remnants of the past – the intact collection of Cardinal Alessandro Albani’s prestigious antiquities, curated by 18th century archeologist and art historian Johann Joachim Winckelmann. We already know Lanthimos approaches the past with an incredibly dry sense of humour from the Oscar-winning The Favourite, and now he brings that same ethos to fashion. Neo-classical statues come to life like Tyra Banks in Life-Size and interact with the Cruise 2020-clad youth, exploring the transient, living subject matter of humanity. The photobook is now on sale via Idea Books as well as the brand’s own bookstores, Gucci Garden in Florence and Gucci Wooster in New York. And proving all is not in vain, the Leda Gallery of Villa Albani Torlonia will be undergoing renovation thanks to this project and Gucci’s support.
