HERE’S HOW TO HELP WITH THE AUSTRALIAN BUSHFIRES

Tuesday 7th January 2020

As we face the biggest climate crisis in Australia, here are some of the ways in which we can help the victims and volunteer firefighters. The NSW Rural Fire Service has announced that “the best way [to help] is to donate money. This allows people to buy the things they need, and it supports local businesses which have also been impacted.” As well as the below charities and funds, Australian comedian Celeste Barber has raised over $40 million (!!!) in a few days through a Facebook donation page which is still going.

The Australian Red Cross Disaster Relief and Recovery Fund
The Red Cross helps send staff members and volunteers to communities affected and provides support and shelter to those who have lost their homes or been evacuated from their towns. The Red Cross also issues emergency grants to help people with immediate needs.

Salvation Army Australia:
“Financial donations also allow residents the opportunity to make their own choices and inject much-needed funds into local economies and businesses, helping communities recover sooner,” the organization says.

St Vincent de Paul Society
St Vincent’s shows that $50 provides food for a displaced family, $150 helps with bills and $300 can provide clothing to a family who have had to leave their belongings in their house.

NSW Rural Fire Service
Donations made directly to the NSW RFS go directly to the volunteer brigades. All donations over $2.00 are tax-deductible.

WIRES Wildlife
The NSW Wildlife Information, Rescue and Education Service Inc. is Australia’s largest wildlife rescue organisation that is looking after the millions of animals that are injured from the fires as well as those seeking shelter, food and water.

Port Macquarie Koala Hospital
The koala hospital’s is looking after koala’s brought to them from fire grounds. The money donated to them goes toward purchasing vehicles to distribute water, setting up drinking water stations and expand their breeding program.

Airbnb
Airbnb is offering free temporary open homes for the displaced south of Sydney as well as Melbourne surrounding suburbs.
