A portrait of an artist and a brilliant menswear collection. For Spring/Summer 2021, Kim Jones collaborated with Ghanian-born, Vienna-trained artist Amoako Boafo after meeting in 2019 at the Rubell Museum in Miami. Boafo explores his identity and perception of blackness through his portraits Black Diaspora and for SS21, they have been transposed and infused literally and metaphorically onto Jones’s designs through couture techniques. Knitwear is brought to life with Boafo’s artworks and jacquard patterns appear as painted canvases. Perfect for the French arteest who sits by his canvas in a Stephen Jones for Dior beret in his uniform of Kim Jones’ expert tailoring. And the film! A fashion film for this digital fashion week that makes us think and deeply understand the collaboration through its first instalment inside Boafo’s studio in Ghana; and the second chapter as we watch the collection through the lens of Jackie Nickerson. This collection is here to reinforce Dior’s commitment to celebrate the work of young artists and in doing so, has pledged support to an art initiative in Ghana founded by Boafo himself for the creation of a place of residence for young artists. A clever collection for times like these. Watch the full film below.
