Twas a sight to behold. It could’ve been Serge Gainsbourg or any French rock legend or perhaps it was Mick Jagger strolling out in Hedi Slimane’s latest collection delivered yesterday in Paris for Celine. Three piece tailored suits as skinny and sharp as a pencil defined the body; skinny ties, fringed evening scarves and red carnations added an ironic note. This was a collection for skinny, yes, tall young man and would look equally good on skinny tall women of course but then Hedi has always offered us non gender specific wardrobe for options. The chocolate leather bomber jacket and pinstripe pants plus snakeskin shoes were as wide as it got in this skinny conversation. We all wanted look five – the double breasted pinstripe suit – just so damn chic and what’s not to love about jeans, a tomboy shirt and blazer that quintessential French uniform. This was a collection of vintage riffing pieces, a nostalgic conversation starter perhaps shades of the late 60s and 70s Sergeant Pepper, shades of Jane Birkin undeniable always in this handwriting. It also reminded us of Porridge, that BBC 70s classic and all the other sitcoms from that era. Leaver jackets my darlin’. The final favourite look: the double-breasted Tuxedo and the dramatic gilt-edged cape. Swagger. Heady stuff.
