It’s open. A hot mess of Del Kathryn Barton, an assault on the senses. Her new work ‘sing blood-wings sing’ 2017 is five panels of synthetic polymer paint and fibre tipped pen dragon lady. Vivid. Rip off the band aid. And “Red” the film she directed last year is playing – uncompromising, powerful, poetic. Stay all day sucks you in. A ballad of post coital incredible of the female Red Back spider. Stick it to the man ever so gently. There are swathes of womanhood, running with red paint, Volcanic Women, delicate, strong, a melody of never ending pain. Her spidery hand written Mackintosh musings are indelible, she is Delible. There is trouble, eyes and flowers wide open, an invitation to be fucked, get fucked, and a wall of daubed words. Milk. Dream. Woof. Flesh. Pussy. In no particular order. ‘the highway is a disco’ (the title) yes hell it is – as this whole intense extravaganza delivers the moment when we dance and can’t stop, can’t stop the music, bloodied, exhausted, it’s a freight train. Overwhelming good.
the highway is a disco, Del Kathryn Barton is at The Ian Potter Centre, NGV from 17 November – 12 March, 2018
