Back in September of 2019, all was well with the world and we were quite certain we would be taking a trip to Capri to experience the Chanel Cruise 2020/2021 show on May 7th of 2020. Not quite the case. Due to the global health crisis, all Cruise shows (and future fashion weeks in 2020) have been cancelled, or are going digital. But fear not, Virginie Viard has ensured we see the collection, ‘A Trip around the Mediterranean’ through a scorching hot campaign. “Initially I had Capri in mind, where the show was supposed to take place, but didn’t happen in the end because of lockdown,” says Virginie Viard. “So we had to adapt: not only did we decide to use fabrics that we already had, but the collection, more generally, evolved towards a trip around the Mediterranean… The islands, the scent of the eucalyptus, the pink shades of the bougainvillea.” Actresses of the ’60s who would holiday on the Italian and French Riviera were also inspo – much like the new Chanel makeup collection. And so, Cruise is for the Chanel girl on the go and this time she’s travelling light, as Viard intended this to be “a wardrobe that can be carried in a little suitcase on wheels, a shopper and an embroidered handbag”. We’re dreaming of hot, steamy sunsets in embellished Chanel bra tops and open light tweed jackets with matching mini skirts and double C’s dripping in gold and diamonds around our waist. The collection is in store from November… just in time for our Southern Hemisphere summer.
