My happy places, in no particular order: staying at the Chateau Marmont for ghosts and LA spirit. Writing. Swimming. Falling. Fistfuls of fresh figs picked straight off the tree in Italy with Collette. Laughing so hard. Dancing wildly in the dead of night. Setting the table. Drinking a gin and tonic a day and throwing a toast to my dad. Meeting new people and being amazed at what I’ve missed out on. Shaking the tree. Awareness. Change all around. Seeing. Books piled up and read: William Boyd, Joan Didion, Oscar Wilde, Doris Lessing, Anita Brookner, Françoise Sagan, Edith Wharton. So many friends. Proust in bed. Unexpectedly talking to Lou Doillon and loving her energetic pursuit of life, doing so much just being an original bohemian and as good as you want her to be. Working with new people for this issue: Nicole Brannen in New Zealand, who photographed the shooting star who is Benee. And Jamie-Maree Shipton, who fashion-edited and art-directed our Balenciaga story so effortlessly, even though she was locked down and up against it between Paris and London. And Petta Chua, who is a brilliant heartbeat of passion and worked with Daphne Nguyen and a great crew for our celebration of Asian Australia for our Fendi story. Not forgetting Daphne’s story with musician Azure Ryder. Oh, and working with Ted Min and Sarah Starkey for the first time – nuts and brilliant. Fridge magnets: thank you, Noelle Faulkner – please read about her epiphany. And Sophia, our editor-in- chief, always makes me happy – she is now 70% recovered from Covid-19. And always the Polaroids and the garden and the sea. They’re all in here, my happy places. Go forth, dive in. A portfolio of possibilities, wonderful, magnificent, extraordinary, this life.
