VIVIENNE WESTWOOD: SS22

|
Written By:

When Vivienne Westwood first began using her fashion platform to talk about climate justice, people scoffed. Now, that conversation is at the forefront of everyone’s minds and Westwood is vindicated. Her latest collection pushes an anti-war message and highlights ethical production.

Inspired by the sea and her own back catalogue, in particular, the summer 1998 Tied to The Mast collection. Her update for SS22 is called Save Our Souls,  and chimes with her ‘buy less, buy better’ ethos. Fans of Westwood’s corseted, swashbuckling, pirate looks will be pleased although this is no ’90s reissue. Not only has she reduced the number of styles in an effort to cut down on waste, but, fast forward 23 years from Tied To The Mast and you have a collection conceived in an entirely different way.

With the emphasis on ethical fabrics and production, She describes it as a “lovely efficient collection,” and proudly boasts of its eco-credentials. Her famous tartans are made from 100% recycled polyester, and she’s also championing regenerative agriculture where fibers are grown or reared with a holistic farming approach that focuses on enhancing the ecosystem and strengthening the health and fertility of farm soil. At Westwood, the clothes are good and also a force for good.
