TOM FORD: SS22 READY-TO-WEAR

|
Written By:

Only Tom Ford could make athleisure look glamorous enough to rival any red-carpet gown. Fashion’s perennial king of sexy bling turns everything to gold. For his first post-lockdown show, Ford replaced formal dressing-up with easy, sporty shapes and then bedazzled them. The designer shot his racer back tanks, basketball shorts, track pants, ribbed knits and roomy blazers, through a high-shine, ultra-luxe, satin-and-sequin prism. And much like the world itself, his models came out ready to party.

As always, in his self-penned show notes, Ford offered some sharp observations on how fashion fits into our lives post-pandemic. Living in LA, where athleisure is the uniform, has shaped his aesthetic but that laid-back, Californian approach to clothes went global during lockdown and although the world is opening up, Ford believes comfort and ease aren’t going away just yet. People don’t dress up in the daytime anymore, he noted, but they still want photogenic, high-octane looks for night and for their social media accounts.

“My clothes this season are simple in cut but not in impact,” said Ford, who is the true American heir to Roy Halston. Not only does he own the legendary designer’s masterpiece modernist Manhattan townhouse, but just like Halston, he’s applying couture-level artistry to easy, sporty dressing. The beautiful people can’t get enough of it. All the more reason to invest in a pair of hand-sequinned basketball shorts or a glittering racer back tank dress. See you on the dancefloor.
