We do love the Zimmermann show in New York. Always feels like a nice calm familiarity in the craziness of it all. This season the collection was titled ‘Unbridled’ going back to Victorian times, and most excitingly all about a woman’s love for her horse and riding. To Patti Smith’s cover of “Smells Like Teen Spirit” the girls walked, eerie – and the perfect, sinister song that just felt so right as the anthem for a collection set in the country. “Our muse is a youthfully adventurous Victorian era woman,” Nicky Zimmermann told us before the show. “She lives in oppressive surroundings but finds freedom and a chance for mischief in her horse and her riding. She’s sneaking out and going wherever the night will take her.” It was filled with swashbuckling swagger. Victorian bodice rippers, leather corsets that recalled saddlery. Whip it, gurl. Shoulders swooped high and stretch silk twill draped but also fitted the body. A classic Zimmermann collection even more resolved for the woman who likes some wardrobe drama, dahling, a patchwork of layering yet still tempered with some relative simplicity with a few scoop neck silk jersey gowns . “I want these women to feel feminine but with a quiet strength.” Yes, they were very strong in all their Zimmermann armour. Ride on.
