TOMO KOIZUMI: AW19 NYFW

Monday 11th February 2019

Sugar and finally, some spice at New York Fashion Week. Into Marc Jacobs’ Madison Avenue store, Tomo Koizumi, the Tokyo-based designer took over with a lineup of technicolor cascading organza frills. As our Editirix-in-Chief calls her, fashion’s fairy godmother Katie Grand was the mastermind behind the moment, finding Koizumi on Instagram and styling the show. It was all the colours of the rainbow worked into ombre’d ruffles, flouncing and bouncing so short and larger than life in gown-like skirts paired with Statue of Liberty collaged t-shirts. A little TYSM to America. Koizumi said that he was inspired by Japanese funerary banners to Leigh Bowery and Capucci. We like his style. It was a solid lineup for a first show; Gwendoline Christie closed the show and Bella Hadid, Joan Smalls, Karen Elson and Taylor Hill were werking those frills, we suspect thanks to KG. It was a moment oh and how we love an unexpected fashion moment.
