New York City, to Karl Lagerfeld – and Gabrielle Chanel – is “a point of reference — the city where nothing is impossible.” So of course it was possible for Lagerfeld to hold a night at the Met museum for Chanel Pre-Fall 2019. The 10 B.C. Temple of Dendur loomed and so Lagerfeld’s ladies walked like an Egyptian, gleaming in gold that sparkled slyly on tweed jackets as gold leather boots, jackets and turban-like hats were painted to shine. Double denim was tough and the sheerest pure white chiffon flowed like a river down to the floor underneath tweed skirts. Layer it up. Have no fear that a few hours before the show the House said it would no longer use exotic skins – crocodile and snake skin effects were still very much slithering through the collection, created from stamped leather and small scale-shaped sparkles. Clever. Brilliant bolts of teal and red and metallic sheens embellished it all. Oh and Pharrell was there, walking with Cleopatra style eyeliner on point. The Egyptian woman is on a night out in New York. Karl’s got the midas touch.
