“My earliest memory isn’t of a boat, but of the sound of a boat.”
– Karl Lagerfeld
We are with you on that, the first memory we have of a boat is crossing the English Channel on a great big car ferry from Dover to Calais, waking up to the sound of the sea. We were on our way to drive round France for a whole month, during one of those blissful long school holidays in the 1970’s. We love that Karl always takes us on a journey of some sort. His beautiful photographs of the latest Chanel ambassador Penelope Cruz, in Cruise 2018/19 capture the light classicism and strength of both his design and her personality. Favourite is the La Pausa sweater because it takes us to the heartland of Chanel’s 1929 home which she so brilliantly commissioned in Roquebrune-Cap-Martin, the quintessential place to ‘resort’ in the Mediterranean. It launched the career of then 28 year old architect Robert Streitz. This sense of coastal/holiday escapism of course flowed into last weeks Chanel-Sur-Mer SS19 show at the Grand Palais, complete as it was with a sandy beach and piston driven waves lapping at the feet of the guests. If ever there is a time to invest in Chanel it is now, so much grace and lightness and we are almost at the end of an era.
