Drum roll, please… Hedi Slimane is ready for battle. If the beginning of his debut show for Celine was a statement, it’s that he walks to the beat of his drum and you can’t do anything about it. Noted. It was the fashion month moment we’ve all been waiting for. Karl Lagerfeld sat front row beside Lady Gaga (major) – his biggest fans. Expectations were high but he did what Hedi does – as Vanessa Friedman tweeted, “Plus ça change… Hedi Slimane’s first @Celine show. Well, the hats were new for him.” Yes, it was a rainbow of black – ruffles, sequins, polka dots and veils. The men wore skinny suits, narrow ties and cropped trousers. There were rare splashes of colour in Christmas red, green and gold and a printed sequinned big bomber. Partay. But it seems Hedi has missed the memo – there needs to be a diversity of cultures on the catwalk, there’s no excuse. At the start of this week, Hedi’s interview with Le Figaro was a definitive insight into his signature and gave us hope… But as he said, “You have to be yourself, against all odds.” The question is, do we want to march with him?
