When Virgil Abloh speaks, we listen. He is currently “the man”. In celebration of his collaboration with Nike, ‘The Ten’ popping up in Sydney, Virgil came down under to talk to us about what it’s like collaborating with such an iconic brand and his key to success right now. Hanging off his every word, he is our master on the street front right now. He told us that “it’s easier to not consider it a collaboration, and just to focus on the design… I don’t have a favourite [shoe], I liked them all. The challenge was to try and make shoes I didn’t like.” The uglier, the better. Obvs successful, he said the key to his come up has been authenticity. And so, dear Tenners, we were each given a pair of Nike Air Force 1’s, some velcro, coloured swoosh’s, hammers and tools to create our own authentic shoes. It was simple like being at school yet totally liberating to create something we solely believe in. We have worn them to much acclaim already, even though they were made to be ‘art pieces’. But we wear our art on our sleeves (or feet). Our design process was a lot like Virgil’s: Just do it.
