TEN QUESTIONS WITH CHARLOTTE DAY WILSON

|
Written By:

Charlotte Day Wilson is making music that’s built to stand the test of time. The Toronto-born singer, songwriter and producer is gearing up to release her newest, 13-track odyssey exploring Wilson’s past, present and future, informed by the melancholic hue of the album’s title Cyan Blue. Inspired by the response of Wilson’s synesthesia to the blue-green colourway of her eyes, the lyrics are laced with rich emotion, navigating themes of love, loss, hope, frustration and gratitude to create a body of work that lands beyond Wilson’s perfectionist comfort zone.

Working with co-producer Jack Rochon helped Wilson embrace this newfound creative openness, allowing the new album to mark a new stage in her career, coloured by experimentation. Pair this with the artist’s masterful ability to speak to her own experiences whilst holding space for her listeners to resonate personally, Wilson’s already illustrious career is set to grow from strength to strength. Here, we sit down with Wilson to talk about the inspiration behind the album, her pinch-me moment and her pre-show hype song.

What are three words to describe your sound?

"Sad, rich, sexy.”

You explained that the album is a way of looking “through the unjaded eyes of my younger self again,”– if you could bring to life one of your childhood toys to listen to your album which one would it be?

“Haha. Bunkey!!! My stuffed albino monkey.”

In your song ‘New Day’ you express a tender commitment to your family-to-be – what are you most looking forward to about one day being a mother?

“As someone who unashamedly believes that the purpose of life is to love well and be loved, I’m endlessly curious about the type of love parents have for their children. It’s really about the love and how our frameworks shift when love is at the centre of our intentions.”

In ‘Walk With Me’ you reminisce on one of your by-gone relationships. What is your favourite post-break up self-care routine for when you need a pick me up?

“Gym, shop, laundry!”

You’ve previously been sampled by the likes of Drake, John Mayer, and James Blake, if you could collaborate on a song with anyone dead or alive, who would it be?

“Stevie Wonder.”

You spoke about how Cyan Blue was a way of “kicking your perfectionist tendencies” and being freer with your writing, where in the world do you feel the most free?

“I feel the most free wherever there is NO cell phone service and there IS a studio setup.”

What has been the most ‘pinch me’ moment in your career?

“My biggest pinch me moment was actually years ago, sitting down and having lunch with Leslie Feist. I realised I had made it, sitting across from one of my idols for a casual hang.”

What’s your pre-show hype song?

“‘All The Things (Your Man Won’t Do)’ by Joe.”

Summer festival or intimate concert?

“Intimate concert all day every day.”

What does the rest of this year hold for you?

“Touring, living, laughing and LOVING.”
